Patricia May Turner

Patricia May Turner passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023 while surrounded by her adoring family. She is survived by her husband Claren, their two children Riana (Troy) and Lee (Monica), her grandchildren, who she lovingly referred to as the “lights of her life” Anissa, Aspen, and Holt and her sister Christina.

Pat was born in Saskatchewan and raised in Flin Flon. She left her hometown when she travelled to Winnipeg to pursue a career in education. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Claren Turner. Following their marriage in 1969, they settled in Brandon.

Pat cherished her role as a teacher, and taught her whole career with the exception of choosing to stay home with her son and daughter during their precious childhood years. She worked at a number of schools including Vincent Massey, J.R. Reid, and Linden Lanes. Even in retirement, she continued to inspire and educate children by teaching Sunday school at her beloved church, St. Matthews Cathedral.

Those who knew Pat know her favourite place was Wellman Lake. This was where she spent countless summers making priceless memories with her family. She could often be found “taking a dip” in the lake, sitting and reading in the sun, or simply pausing to appreciate the world around her.

Pat did everything in life with passion, meaning, and authenticity. She delighted in exploring the outdoors, crafting and creating with her grandchildren, and loved to make her grandmother’s fudge at Christmas. Pat sang joyfully and was an enthusiastic part of the “Women in Harmony” singing group. An example of her care and dedication — in her perfect teacher’s penmanship she would put small notes on gifts to loved ones, wanting to share the meaning of what was beneath the wrapping paper. She was fearless and devoted, loyal and patient. Pat’s life was defined by her grace and her spirit of generosity. She lived her life to the fullest while ensuring that those around her were always left feeling loved and seen.

You will always be in our hearts. Until we meet again.

Funeral service will be held at St .Matthews Anglican Cathedral, 403 13th Street, Brandon, MB on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 2p.m.

Sylvia Patricia Ducharme (Rzyhak)

January 1, 1951 – March 18, 2022

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Sylvia Patricia Ducharme, beloved wife, mother and Grammy. She passed away in the loving arms of her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Sylvia was born in Winnipeg on January 1, 1951. One of seven children, she was raised on a farm in Medika, Manitoba. She shared countless memories of her life growing up there. Although chores were plentiful, and the work was hard, she still found time to have fun and get into mischief with her siblings.

At the age of 15, Sylvia met the love of her life Gordon. They married young and created an incredible life together that lasted almost 54 years. Moving to Winnipeg and then eventually settling in Transcona, they raised their two children. They started with very little, but through hard work and many sacrifices, were able to provide a good life for their family. Growing up, some of our most treasured memories were spent camping. We travelled many places throughout North America, but summers in Detroit Lakes with family were some of the best times.

As their kids got older, Sylvia and Gord built a cottage at Falcon Lake to keep their family close. Cottage life created so many wonderful memories. Watching performances and having lots of laughs around the fire, going for boat rides, taking long walks, or entertaining friends and family, it was all time well spent. The cottage was Sylvia’s “happy place”.

Sylvia’s love of travel took her many places over the years. Whether it was travelling with Gord for his job, or taking short shopping trips to Grand Forks, she enjoyed being on the go. Some of her favorite places were the East Coast, Hawaii, Europe and her other “happy place”, Disney World. Many fun-filled vacations were spent there with her children and grandchildren. After retiring, her and Gord spent winters in Florida and for the last several years in Arizona.

Sylvia was extremely hard working. She could never sit down for long before noticing that something had to be organized or cleaned. She never complained about anything, she just did it.  She took pride in having her home and cottage “just so” and would spend hours puttering around outside. It always amazed us at how much energy she had and what she could accomplish in a short time. Her grandchildren would always say “Grammy can do anything” and that truly was the case. We all benefitted from her amazing cooking. She never followed recipes, simply taste tested and added what she felt was necessary. Her whole family looked forward to the smell of her famous Sunday morning waffle breakfasts and her Christmas Eve dinner was the most anticipated meal of the year.

Some of her favorite past times included dining out at restaurants and shopping. She looked forward to meeting up for breakfasts with friends or family. She loved to shop and was always on the hunt for treasures. She had a knack for finding good deals or cool gadgets. She would buy multiples of items, just so she could share her finds with others. She was always a willing partner to explore new places to eat, tea houses, gift shops and farmer’s markets.

Sylvia enjoyed talking with friends, family or even strangers. She could spend hours catching up on the phone with her siblings, children, grandchildren or close friends. Wherever she went, she was always meeting new people and could easily strike up a conversation with them. By the end of their chat, she knew their life story and they knew hers.

She was extremely devoted to her family and always put them first. Whatever anyone needed, she would drop what she was doing and be there for them. Her selflessness and generosity were felt by all of those around her. She was genuinely happy for everyone’s accomplishments and loved to help people.

Sylvia adored her grandchildren and had a special way to connect with each one of them and let them know they were deeply loved. Her and dad cheered them on in all of their activities and were there to support them during important milestones. Sleepovers at Grammy and Grandpa’s house meant being spoiled with lots of treats, and an abundance of love and TLC.

She will be forever missed by her husband Gordon, her daughter Michelle (Chris) McColm, son Jason Ducharme and her beloved grandchildren Allie, Ethan, and Grace. She is survived by her siblings Clifford (Linda), Diana (Mike), Gail (Allan), Ricky (Janine), Brenda (Walter) and Shelly (Bob) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Peter and Frances Rzyhak, her father and mother-in law, Maurice and Josephine Ducharme, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beatrice and Larry and her nephew Mason.

Cremation has taken place. As per Sylvia’s wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

If desired, donations in Sylvia’s memory can be made to The Dream Factory, 303-1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4C6.

Alison Patricia Turchinski (nee Hunter)

July 9th, 1936 – March 6th, 2022

Surrounded by loved ones, it is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing at home of our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother on March 6th, 2022 at the age of 85.

Alison (Pat) was born in Winnipeg July 9th, 1936 to Alyson and Robert Hunter. She grew up in the Norwood Flats area, and went on to work for many years at the Childrens Aid Society.

In 1956, through family friends, she met Louie who she would later marry in 1961 and become the love of her life for the next 59 years until his passing in 2020.

During their lives together they both enjoyed many years at the cottage they built in Lac du Bonnet, canning fruits and vegetables along with gardening and tending to the rose gardens at home.

Retiring from the Childrens Aid Society in the early 1970’s, she went on to raise her family, and spend a lot of her time doing what she loved, baking.

In her later years she enjoyed reading fantasy novels, doing crossword puzzles, watching The Young and Restless, and drinking her diet A&W rootbeer.

Left to mourn, her sons, Todd (Bobbie) Turchinski of Winnipeg Beach, Glenn (Anna) Turchinski of Lac du Bonnet, and step son Edward Turchinski of Victoria BC.

Her Grandchildren, Cody (Phylicia) Turchinski of Winnipeg, Christopher (Hilary) Turchinski of Winnipeg, Katie (Tavis) McGregor of Winnipeg, Alina (Andi) Bauer of Germany, and Maggie Turchinski of Washington DC.

Her Great Grandchildren, Emily, Annabelle, Logan, Jackson, Brody, Lucia and Sophia.

She is predeceased by her loving husband Louie, her mother Alyson, her father Robert, and her two sisters, Lorraine and Susan.

We, the family, would like to thank Dr. Harris along with all the other Doctors and nurses at Gimli Hospital for all the great care she was given in the later part of her life. We would also like to thank the group of homecare ladies: Sandra, Lisa, Kim, Janna, Gloria and Lucille who made her final months special.

As per her request, Cremation has taken place with a Celebration of life to follow at a later date.

Patricia Leslie Cerkow (nee Coburn)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia (Pat) Cerkow, 79, peacefully in her home on February 2, 2022 with family by her side.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Arthem (Art) Cerkow, children Michael Cerkow, Norine Hiebert (Ben), Austin Cerkow, Melissa Delaronde (Lorne), grandchildren Brittany, Riley, Elizabeth, Brady, Holly, Sophia, Isabella, Colton, Keenan, great grandchildren Makaela and Payton.    She is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Phyllis Sazynski.

Pat was born on July 1, 1942 in Winnipeg and grew up in East Kildonan.    She graduated from Miles MacDonnell Collegiate and spent her early career in the 1960’s at Monarch Life, where she enjoyed giving tours of the modern new building.

Pat met her husband, Art, at the age of 19 and they were happily married for the next 60 years.  She loved being a stay at home mom while her 4 children were young, and building their new home together in North Kildonan in 1980.  Pat worked for Manitoba Public Insurance for 17 years in administration until her retirement.  Pat and Art enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Lee River, getting together with family and friends, and traveling in their retirement years.  Her favorite trip was visiting her son in Australia where they toured up and down the east coast.  Over the years, Pat had a special place in her heart for her many pet dogs.

Pat was a dedicated mother and grandmother first and foremost.  She treasured her family and embraced every minute with them.  She loved family dinners and weekends at the cabin, hosted many holiday celebrations and birthdays in her home, and was a proud spectator at all our big moments.  She is a symbol of unconditional love and nurturer to all of us.  She will be forever in our hearts.

The family would like to thank the staff of the palliative care program from St. Boniface Hospital, as well as the many friends and family who helped support us during these past 5 weeks.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place.  A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul. Due to current covid regulations, proof of vaccination and photo I.D. will be required to attend.
