Sonia Gulbis

Peacefully in the early morning of October 19, 2022, at Park Manor, Sonia passed away at the age of 99 years.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

Are You There Momma?

All it takes is one picture, one memory, one song
Ever since you left us everything seems wrong
The sadness can hit me and knock me on the floor
They say it gets easier but it’s hurting so much more
I still can hear your voice and I visualize your face
But all I want is to have you right back in your place
Can you hear me momma, in my dreams I call for you
And I try so hard to get to you but I don’t know what to do
Can you see me momma, are you watching over me?
Is Heaven all they say it is, are you healthy and happy?
Your family is hurting; it’s so hard since you’ve been gone
I’m crying so much now, but I once was very strong
Losing you has changed me, made me someone new
I know you want me happy so I’ll try to be that for you
Please watch over us all, from your perch up in the sky
And every time I think of you I’ll try hard not to cry
Can you hear me momma, calling out your name
I feel you all around me, but it’ll never be the same
Can you see me momma, as you look down from your cloud?
I hope and pray with all my might that I still make you proud.

André Eugene Joseph Lafrenière

August 27, 1953 – August 08, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of André Lafrenière announces his peaceful passing.  He has gone home to be with his Gloria, his parents, and grandparents.

For those that knew André, and he knew a great many people as he would talk to everyone about anything, the most important thing to him was his family.  As many people also know, our family is not only a blended family but also a family of the heart.

Born the second child of Alain and Rose Lafrenière, André was raised with siblings – Léon, Gilles (Joanne), Paul (Gloria) and Cécile (Bernie Lowe, dec) to have a strong sense of the importance of home, family and community.  This was accomplished in many ways: weekends at the cabin, lending a hand or 10 to local farmers, church on Sundays, and community volunteering. However, the large family celebrations, attended by all who could make it, is where the strong love of extended family is rooted.  Birthdays, weddings and funerals are always attended, never missing an opportunity to connect and reinforce the strength of the family.

From his family’s home to a family home of his own, André and wife Gloria (nee Baker) forged a new branch to the family tree.  André worked for the Paper Mill in Pine Falls for over 35 years; we have all heard the mill stories, he had immense pride in his job but that always came second to his love of family & friends. André loved curling in both the men’s league with Puck, his best friend, and in mixed bonspiels with his wife, Gloria.  In the summer, you’d find him at the baseball diamond playing Slo-Pitch with the Mill electrical crew, “Ohm-Base”.

On weekends, he would spend time with Gloria and his three girls: Chantelle (Josh), Neeks (Paul), and Bean (Adam); camping, trips to Winnipeg with the Naults, backyard bonfires, fishing or swimming at the family cabin in Hillside Beach.

Later in life, André welcomed Janice, Mat (Stephanie) and Merisa (Kyle) into his family.  André delighted in teaching Janice and the kids the importance of family gatherings, the value found in extended family, and the strength to be found in community.  Whether it was weekends at the cabin, family trips or visiting with extended family, the message remained consistent, its all about family.

Like oil and water, a newly blended family doesn’t always readily mix, but with time and perseverance we managed to create a rather large, loud, and loving family.  A family that grew with new spouses, new “kids” and best of all grandchildren.  André truly loved being a grampa and a pepere to Ashton, Hayley, Liam, Emily, Henry, James, Oliver, and Finnley.  They will have great memories of pepere/grampa in the pool and ice cream on the deck.

The family has many great memories of our time together and have spent many hours reminiscing and telling André stories.  We have all heard his stories of his grandparent’s farm, large family gatherings with both his father’s and mother’s families, tales of his childhood, and stories about his large family.  We have also heard a great many stories of his adventures with friends, hunting, fishing, curling, and of course his time spent at fly-in fishing lodges.

André was a master story teller and a master of the art of chit chat.  We invite his friends and family to stop by Great Falls Community Hall on Sunday, August 28, 2022 from 1 to 4 pm to share stories and memories of André.

In lieu of donations, André’s wish would be that you enjoy time with your loved ones.

Marvin David Birston

April 22, 1952 – August 1, 2022

On Monday August 1, 2022 Marvin suddenly left us to be with his wife Evelyn, mother Elsie, father John, stepmother Kay, brothers Troy & Patrick.

Remaining to forever cherish his memory are sisters Joyce (Pete), Sharon (Charlie), Kathy (Keith) brothers David, John (Nancy), Stepchildren Rena and Marc, Mother-In-law Priscilla, Brothers-In-Law Gerald (Muriel), Warren; Sister-In-Law Sandi (Greg), step grandchildren Dominique, Dawson, Andrew, Sophia and Anthony Jr; Nephews Doug (Zuzana), Aaron (Shawntae); Nieces Tamara, Kaylynne (Nic), Kayla and Great-nephew Kashy.

My big brother Marvin grew up on River Road in Lockport with myself (Joyce) arriving a few years later. Marvin didn’t mind me tagging along as his little sister. He was quite the inventor. He designed a treehouse that had a rooftop deck and an interior with a bench seat as our sofa. It also had a secret trap door that led to the hollow of the tree. We had many hours of fun there.

Marvin also built a go kart with the help of our father. It was great fun running it on the road going down a steep hill. Probably not the safest, but it was the late 50’s and not so busy. He loved it.

Once in the winter Marvin and Dad thought it would be a good idea to use a car hood to go sledding down the river bank. It was a pretty bumpy ride.

He was quite the teaser and I must say sometimes got great pleasure out of tormenting his little sister with his jokes and tricks. I think he carried that sense of humour throughout his life.

As a child Marvin built a rocket radio he received through the Eaton catalogue for Christmas. Also a cool steam engine; he was quite proud of them.

Marvin was always helping our father with any of his mechanical duties. This came in handy for him in later years.

In his early teens Marvin moved to East Selkirk with our father. We were blessed with more brothers and a little sister. I later joined them for 3 years after the death of our mother which Marvin took very hard.

We always had a pet of some sort and Marvin’s love of animals carried on his adult years and he adored his cat Tracy. His niece Kayla has adopted Tracy for Marvin. He would be very happy to know this.

Marvin always called for any special occasion, he always asked how his niece and nephew were doing and his finishing sentence with me was always “I love you sis”. We love you Marvin and you will be missed ~ Joyce.

Marvin married the love of his life Evelyn November 29, 2003 at the Holy Trinity Church in Winnipeg. They were so good for each other; with lots of laughs throughout the years. Suddenly last year Evelyn passed away and we take comfort in knowing they are together again.

Marvin was retired, in his younger years he worked as a load operator at Jones Sand and Gravel, Selkirk Redi-Mix, ABM and Chabot. He took great pride in his work. He worked as a caretaker in an apartment building for a few years as well.

He made a point to call family and friends on a weekly basis or on birthdays. He’d always let the rest of us know how others were doing.

Marvin was a very kindhearted, thoughtful brother, uncle, stepdad and stepgrandfather. He always looked forward to visiting his family and friends.

Our family wants to make a special mention to Marvin’s neighbor; Andy, for always being there to lend a hand.

A memorial service will be held on Monday August 22 at 2 pm at Old St. Andrews on the Red Anglican Church, St. Andrews, Manitoba.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolence on Marvin’s memorial page by using the comment field below.
