Margaret Marion Glew (Newman)

August 12, 1945 – October 8, 2024

The family is deeply saddened by the passing of our beautiful sister Margaret Glew (Newman) at the age of 79 years. Marg fought a courageous three round battle with cancer that ultimately ended in the early morning on Tuesday, October 8.

Marg was predeceased by her parents, Stan and Betty Newman and her life partner Leo Girouard, as well as her beloved dogs Toby, Rusty and Bella. She is survived by her son Darren (Tamara) and five siblings Stan (Barb), Les (Eleanor), Ken, Randal (Brad) and Valerie as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. She will be missed by so many friends.

Born in Windsor, Ontario she moved to Winnipeg with her parents and four brothers in 1957. After arriving in Winnipeg, when she learned her mom was having another baby, Marg told everyone about her plan to move out of the family home unless it was a girl. In June 1958 she finally got that little sister.

She attended Churchill High School and started her working life at St. John’s College with the University of Manitoba. She moved from there into Real Estate, initially as an Agent and finally as Marketing Coordinator for Re/Max Professionals. It was during this stage of her career that her first battle of cancer took her away from work.

Marg was married in 1967 and raised her son Darren in Transcona. She was involved with the executive board of Oxford Heights Community Centre and was first a hockey mom, then a football mom. She enjoyed hanging out at the Central Hotel in Transcona where she made so many friends. Marg played softball with her Ballbuster gal pals in Transcona, enjoyed curling, playing cards, and spending time with friends and family. She always had a story or a joke to share. Marg loved her family and friends so much. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

A gathering of family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 from 11am to 2pm at the South Osborne Legion, 426 Osborne Street.

We would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital who were so kind in her last few days. Thanks also to Interlake Cremation and Memorial Services. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter or Winnipeg Humane Society.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on Margaret’s memorial page using the comment field below.

Margaret and I shared both our names. My Mother and Betty were first cousins and always kept in touch even through our years in the Arctic. We shared many wonderful meals at the home on Clare and very enjoyable visits. I will miss Margaret, her warm welcomes and big smiles. In our family MISPAII is goodbye may the Lord bless you and keep you safe until we meet again.
    With Love and saddness

Margaret was a great source of support when I worked with her at remax years ago.
Even better than that was her source of fun and the many good times we had with her throughout the years. I’m so happy that I got to see her recently. And enjoyed her visit immensely Travel safe, Margaret.with love gail

Even though I met Margaret later in her life, it felt like we had always known each other in a way. So easy to talk to, so sweet, so real… and of course there was never a conversation without mentioning her dog. She was keen to know, to understand, so she could better appreciate whatever it was she was experiencing at the time. She was kind, encouraging and supportive of the creativity of others and I will miss her sweet and honest comments about what she always saw in my very abstract work… lol. RIP sweetie.

    Margaret

I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Margarets passing. I worked with Margaret at St. Johns College, so have known here for many years. Even though we lived in different cities we kept in touch over the years. Whenever I was in the city I would go for lunch or have a visit in her home. I will miss her greatly. A big hug to you!

Margaret and I were friends for just under 40 years and we travelled down many roads together. Margaret was truly the glue that kept her many friends from many different walks of life together. She was a people person for sure. She loved to laugh and she loved to dance. She also had a serious side. I am proud to have known and loved Margaret and I blessed because she loved me back. I will miss my Margaret forever and a day.

I remember Margaret’s smile and her wonderful hugs and her happy energy. She was an amazing woman, a beautiful lady and a loving person. I am glad I got to see her in the spring, didn’t know it would be our last hug. May you all find peace and warmth in your loving memories of your sister Marg.

MARGARET MARION NEWMAN…The firstborn. The first child, the first grandchild, my first sister and my first best friend. She was there for me on the worst day of my life and on many of the best days. She celebrated me in so many ways, and I was just as proud of her when she chose to be a working Mother raising Darren on her own. And look how well that turned out. My favorite story about my big sister is recounted in the smalll book she designed for my show FamiliaR. Maybe I can tell it one more time. I was 6, maybe 8 when she joined me sitting on the back step of 328 Clare Avenue, where I was sitting and coloring a bunch of paper angels that our Mom had made on mimeograph paper. She colored a beautiful pale blue dress on her angel and decorated it with simple yellow cris cross stars. I of course wanted to use every crayon in the box and connected the pale yellow stars with green and red and purple. I regretted it instantly! That was the day that I learned what was enough, Margaret was enough….. and every time I use that simple yellow star on a blue background…..I will remember her.

Never was there anyone who had the big personality and care and concern for others. Blessed with creativity, a sense of humour and a love for life and people. That is our Margaret! Rest in peace dear dear friend
