Hans “Peter” Orlick

April 20, 1946 – February 2, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and Opa on February 2, 2023 with family by his side, at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Peter is survived by his wife Valerie of 55 years, daughter Kerrie (Jim), sons Peter and Christopher and sister-in-law Lorraine.  He is remembered by his dedicated granddaughter Kimberly as well as his other grandchildren Lorne, Darren, Rose, Harly, Kristen, Aliyah, Kyle (Miranda) and Rhianne, and endeared friends Aurora, Paula and Vanessa. Peter is also survived by family members in Germany.

Peter was born in Marburg, Germany and moved to Winnipeg as a child.  He completed the drafting program at Tec Voc and went to work for Crippen Acres while attending U of M to complete courses in design and technology. He moved to Toronto and worked for Ontario Hydro for only a few years before returning to Manitoba.  He worked at Atomic Energy of Canada in Pinawa where he and Valerie raised their family.  In the late 1980’s the family moved to Beausejour.  After Peter left work at AECL he continued doing design work privately right up until his last days.

Peter had a zest for life and was always busy.  He loved the outdoors, hiking, canoeing, skiing, fishing, golfing, playing baseball and especially pickle ball. He was a big fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football.  In his younger years he played the violin with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.   He loved music of all kinds, often dancing and singing along to a favorite tune with volume cranked up loud.  He enjoyed painting, photography, history and stamp collecting.  Peter had a great sense of humour and never took life too seriously.  He loved to travel and he and Valerie made their winter home in both Texas and Mexico where they met many new friends.  In the summer time Peter enjoyed sitting around a camp fire with music and a drink or two.

Peter was always involved in the community.  He was involved with the Beausejour/Brokenhead Recreation Commission and volunteered at the Splash pool.  He helped at the Manitoba Games and the Players Cup and was nominated for the Premier’s Volunteer Service Award.   Peter had a passionate involvement with Habitat for Humanity for years and helped to design and build homes for families in the community.  He was on several committees in his condo building and rarely turned down a Whist or Bingo game, a coffee date or a potluck dinner.  Peter will be missed by the many people he met throughout his life.

Thank you to everyone at Cancer Care and the Selkirk Regional Health Centre especially the caring staff on Medicine 1 during his last days.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Peter’s memory to Habitat for Humanity Selkirk Chapter.

Cremation has already taken place.  In accordance with Peter’s wishes and his love of warm weather, a celebration of life will be held in the summertime.

Friends and family are invited to share memories and condolences on Peter’s memorial page by using the comment field below.

Please note: there is a delay between when a comment is submitted and when it appears on the memorial page.

Val and family, we are so saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. He was always very outgoing and willing to help his neighbors and the community. We have great memories from the time we spent as your neighbors on 2nd Street South. Worked with Peter on a few committees and his design work will always remain in the form of the Centennial Sign on Park Avenue. Thinking of you and the family at this difficult time.
