Hans Artur Petersen

March 11, 1938-May 11, 2026 at the age of 88

Hans was predeceased by his son Ronn and leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 65 years Grace and their five girls Ria (Dan), Deanna (Jerry), Rozanne (Myles), Lisa (Bruce) and Amanda (Chris) along with 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Hans was born to Johann Heinrich and Elisabeth Petersen in Cappel Kreis Marburg Germany.  He and a buddy decided to travel the world at the tender age of 17, crossing the ocean on a steam ship in 1955. They ran out of money in Manitoba so Hans became a jack of all trades to survive.  He met the love of his life, Grace, in Thompson where they were both working. They were wed in 1960.  Hans always liked adventure, new challenges, and looking for ways to “save a few dollars, make a few bucks”.  As a result, he and Grace lived many places in Manitoba over the years but no matter where he was, Hans always tried his hardest to provide for his family, often spending much time on the road trucking.  The job he liked to speak of most was with Silverwood Dairies.  He loved delivering dairy to all the rural small-town stores and spoke of it often.  Hans and Grace were eventually led by the Spirit to St. Eustache and Elie.  There they found a community of wonderful people with whom to spend the rest of their days.

Hans will always be remembered for his gorgeous gardens, hard work, hurry up let’s go attitude, adventurous spirit, and sometimes just the right amount of goofiness!

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Portage District General Hospital for their compassion and care in Hans’s final days.

Cremation has taken place and Hans will be laid to rest in Elie MB at the Blessed Sacrament Church Cemetery at a later date.  Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.

Hans “Peter” Orlick

April 20, 1946 – February 2, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and Opa on February 2, 2023 with family by his side, at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Peter is survived by his wife Valerie of 55 years, daughter Kerrie (Jim), sons Peter and Christopher and sister-in-law Lorraine.  He is remembered by his dedicated granddaughter Kimberly as well as his other grandchildren Lorne, Darren, Rose, Harly, Kristen, Aliyah, Kyle (Miranda) and Rhianne, and endeared friends Aurora, Paula and Vanessa. Peter is also survived by family members in Germany.

Peter was born in Marburg, Germany and moved to Winnipeg as a child.  He completed the drafting program at Tec Voc and went to work for Crippen Acres while attending U of M to complete courses in design and technology. He moved to Toronto and worked for Ontario Hydro for only a few years before returning to Manitoba.  He worked at Atomic Energy of Canada in Pinawa where he and Valerie raised their family.  In the late 1980’s the family moved to Beausejour.  After Peter left work at AECL he continued doing design work privately right up until his last days.

Peter had a zest for life and was always busy.  He loved the outdoors, hiking, canoeing, skiing, fishing, golfing, playing baseball and especially pickle ball. He was a big fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football.  In his younger years he played the violin with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.   He loved music of all kinds, often dancing and singing along to a favorite tune with volume cranked up loud.  He enjoyed painting, photography, history and stamp collecting.  Peter had a great sense of humour and never took life too seriously.  He loved to travel and he and Valerie made their winter home in both Texas and Mexico where they met many new friends.  In the summer time Peter enjoyed sitting around a camp fire with music and a drink or two.

Peter was always involved in the community.  He was involved with the Beausejour/Brokenhead Recreation Commission and volunteered at the Splash pool.  He helped at the Manitoba Games and the Players Cup and was nominated for the Premier’s Volunteer Service Award.   Peter had a passionate involvement with Habitat for Humanity for years and helped to design and build homes for families in the community.  He was on several committees in his condo building and rarely turned down a Whist or Bingo game, a coffee date or a potluck dinner.  Peter will be missed by the many people he met throughout his life.

Thank you to everyone at Cancer Care and the Selkirk Regional Health Centre especially the caring staff on Medicine 1 during his last days.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Peter’s memory to Habitat for Humanity Selkirk Chapter.

Cremation has already taken place.  In accordance with Peter’s wishes and his love of warm weather, a celebration of life will be held in the summertime.
