Terrence (Terry) Mitchell

February 8, 1957 – August 26, 2024

After a hard-fought battle with cancer, Terry passed on August 26/24.  He leaves behind his wife of nearly forty years, Annette, his daughters Raye-Leigh, Genevieve (Kris), Amanda (Kyle) & Harlyn (Jordan), three grandsons & six granddaughters.  He was predeceased by his parents Tom & Vickie. 

He was a bear of a man with big hands & a huge heart that had a soft spot for the downtrodden and seriously ill children.  Generous & loyal, his family & friends knew he could always be counted on.  He was happiest when his kids & grandkids would visit & inevitably stay for dinner.

 Terry loved hockey (especially the after-game banter & pranks), travelling, movies, his buddy Max (his dog who predeceased him by one week), and Elvis Presley.  He always made an effort to stay in touch with his many friends from school, hockey & work.  He was proud of his 27 year career as a Winnipeg policeman yet he was truly in his element when he was behind the wheel of a combine, tandem or his Escalade.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., at the Selkirk Community Church, 6569 Provincial Trunk Highway 9, Saint Andrews, MB. R1A 4E6

Honorary pallbearers are his sons-in-law Kris, Kyle & Jordan, grandsons Chase, Nikolas & Brayden, his cousin Johnny Morgoch and longtime friends Bruce Romaniuk, Andy Monostori & Ed Gluting.  A huge thank- you to the staff at Cancer Care & Emergency at Selkirk Health Centre and to Dr. Peter Bialy for tending to Terry’s comfort & well-being over the years.  If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, 533A-715 McDermot Avenue, Wpg. Terrence Keith Wilson

The family of Terry Wilson is sad to announce his passing on Wednesday, June 19 in Gimli, Manitoba.

Terry is survived by his mother Florence, Aunt Ruth, Brother Dale (Sue), nephews Rob and Evan (Brittney) and their mother Carol. Niece Mindy-Rae (Drew) and great-nephew Holden. Children Haley and Shaun, grandchildren Janessa, Griffin, Skylar and son-in-law Jamie. Sue’s children Jessica, Sara, and Davis. He is predeceased by his father Bob and Brother Jim (Carol).

Born in Rathwell Manitoba, the family moved to Winnipeg when Terry was 8. At 18 he started working in the maintenance department at CBC and earned his electricians license. This led to a remarkable career broadcasting the Olympics, Pan-Am Games, Grey Cups, NHL, Briers, Scotties and other sporting events from all corners of the world. His broadcasting colleagues were a second family to him. He was humble yet highly regarded. One of his colleagues stated “Terry was the closest thing we have to a legend in our industry.”

Terry cherished his home on the Sandy Hook Golf Course and enjoyed a quiet retirement. He made weekly visits to Winnipeg to take his mom and Aunt Ruth to appointments, shopping and lunch. He loved golfing, playing cribbage, and watching Jets and Bomber games with his best friends Sam and Karla. He took pride in his house and yard, his annual Christmas display showcased his love of the season. He took a short vacation down south annually but ensured he was back in time to help Byron and Pat get the golf course ready for the season. His life was about helping others.

Above all else, Terry valued his independence and quiet lifestyle which was unfortunately taken from him in the final 18 months of his life. His struggle is over, he is at peace. The family is grateful for all the kindness and care he received at the Gimli Hospital.

He requested no ceremony. Instead, he wanted his friends to remember him fondly while playing cards, golfing, at a family BBQ or watching curling/football/hockey. Toast him as you hit your tee shot on the 5th hole.

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Terry, aged 63 years, at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, after a long hard fought 10 year battle with leukemia.

He is predeceased by his mother Bernice (2018) and his father John (2000). Survived by his sisters Sandra (Dennis) and Tracy, nephews Brad (Sals) Kozoway, Michael (Kayla) Kozoway, niece Kaylin (Joel) Makara, and life companion Sherry Ammeter of 38 years.

Terry’s final place of employment was with ABCO Supply Company in which he really enjoyed. His true passion was sports, especially The Winnipeg Jets and The Green Bay Packers.

Terry will be lovingly remembered for his kind and caring ways along with his amazing sense of humor that brought much joy to all that knew him always. Some very fun and memorable times were had with him. A great guy all around and much loved by many.

Special thanks to Dr. Yang & Staff at Cancer Care and St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for all their care and compassion.

Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held as per his wishes. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

If you are reading this – in the words of a dear friend – “I am GONZO! Love you Wayno.”

Looking back on my life I never thought I would die, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I always knew the possibility was there.

I was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario and I was predeceased by my lovely daughter, Melodie, by my mother Sarah, my parents-in-law Fred and Connie and I assume, by my father who was born in London England.

I am survived by my beautiful, loving, tender spirited wife Glynis. Sweetheart, all these years you were always there for me, and I love you very much. I am also survived by my wonderful children Terry (Betty), Flynne, Michelle, John (Jessica) and Joey (Deb). Also, my grandchildren Kyle, Eric and Julia, Callie and Keenan, Zoe and Deven and Molly, Julianne and Anders. I regret that I didn’t have the opportunity to cultivate stronger relationships with Joey’s sons Chris and Kelly.

I am survived by my sister Ellen (George) and my sister-in-law, Diane, and many nieces and nephews. I bid a fond farewell to my good friends and golfing buddies Ron Osesky, Ray St. Germaine, Owen Clark, Walle Larsson, Kirk Stanley and Frank Weiner.

My childhood years I spent as a ward of the Jewish Orphanage and Knowles School for Boys. The Superintendent of Knowles, Jack Hawkins, was a man who had a unique understanding of children, and he was like a father to me, and the 90 other residents and I loved him.

After I left the orphanage, I was employed in a variety of jobs – a choker in the logging camps of B.C., a roughneck in the oil wells in Alberta. A bit of a rounder, a boxer, and a performer.

At the age of twenty-seven I started T. Morris Booking Agency. I was a co-founder and administrator of The Royal Dance Conservatory. I also co-founded Bravo Concert Productions with my dear friend Wayne Hlady. I spent 60 years in the entertainment industry and had the opportunity to work with an impressive number of gifted performers who poured their passion into their music. These talented people are largely responsible for any measure of the success that I may have achieved along the way.

I was a Charter Member of Variety Club in Manitoba Tent 58. I also had the privilege of serving as Vice President on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers of Manitoba. Goodbye to my little brother Gilbert.

I am on a journey to rejoin my sweet daughter Melodie, and my close friends Pat Riordan, Marty Corne, Roy Petty, Jim Jamieson Sr., Tom Schultz, Bill McGillivray, Mike Pestrak and the many good friends that have passed before me.

Finally, in closing, I once read a quote by a 95-year-old woman who listed the 40 ways she had achieved happiness. One resonated with me. “FORGIVE EVERYONE EVERYTHING.”

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right.

I hope you had the time of your life (Time of Your Life by Green Day).

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
