Paul Brendan Sutton

With family by his side at Grace Hospital, Paul Brendan Sutton passed away on March 17th, just three weeks short of his 95th birthday.

Paul was born in Winnipeg on April 8, 1930. The youngest of 5 boys, he is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Evelyn Sutton (Doherty), brothers John, Ned, Ray, and Joe. Also predeceased by nieces Diane and Sheila, and nephews Michael, Paul and Greg. He leaves behind to celebrate his life, nephews, Patrick of Lloydminster, SK, Joe of Moncton, NB, John (Mara) of London, ON, and nieces, Dr. Evelyn Sutton (Rob Macdonald) of Halifax, NS, Elizabeth (Ralph VanWerkhoven) of Coaldale, AB, niece-in-law Sharon Sutton of Selkirk, MB, and great nephew Brendon, of Selkirk, along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews across the country.

A self-proclaimed “confirmed bachelor”, Paul was known for his wry sense of humour and dry wit, and though somewhat shy, could easily entertain a room if called on. He loved aviation, had his pilot’s license and once owned a glider.

After taking early retirement from his career as an air traffic control supervisor in Winnipeg, Paul enjoyed being active with his local curling club. A lifelong Blue Bomber fan, he took over his father’s season tickets, dating back to Osborne Stadium, eventually passing them on to nephew Greg, whose recent unexpected passing resulted in Brendon becoming the 4th generation to hold the seats.

Paul took great joy in being around his family, although he wouldn’t hesitate to let you know when it was time for him to seek solitude. When he uttered “oh hell’s bells” or “Lord love a duck”, or we could hear the impatient jingling of coins in his pockets as he stood near the door, we all knew he had pretty much exhausted his desire for social interaction. Known for his incredible generosity, he always seemed to be able to come up with the perfect gift at Christmas.

Special thanks to the staff at the Bolton, Homecare Manitoba and all the medical professionals that supported Paul. Most importantly, thanks to the late Greg Sutton, his wife Sharon and son Brendon for the tremendous care and assistance to him over the years.

Funeral service will take place on Friday, April 11, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, MB., with ashes to be interred at St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Elizabeth Marion Nuttall

It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth Marion Nuttall announces her passing on Friday November 25th, 2022 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre in Selkirk, MB.

Elizabeth was born on February 17th, 1937 in Fort Frances, Ontario to Leonard Francis and Sarah Eileen Williams.  As a young woman, she moved to Minneapolis with her first spouse Gary, where she enjoyed working as an Executive Assistant with an architecture firm.  Her next stop was Winnipeg, where she lovingly raised her four children, Greg, Mark, Dale and Laurie.  She also obtained a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba and enjoyed painting and pottery, artistic skills she occasionally put to professional use doing freelance design.  Discovering her entrepreneurial spirit, she moved to Winnipeg Beach, becoming the sole owner and proprietor of the Lone Oak Motel, which she successfully operated for many years, making lifelong friends in the process.  After supposedly “retiring”, Liz was not someone to sit still long, and continued to work into her 80s!  She most recently enjoyed working as a personal support worker, providing special care to her clients, many of whom faced great challenges. 

Elizabeth loved the water and swimming, as well as cross country skiing, playing the organ, baking, gardening, crossword puzzles, games, reading, poetry, and spending time with family.  She was so proud of all her grandchildren.  Her homemade cookies and jams were eagerly awaited.  A lifelong learner, she remained open to new experiences, to trying a new activity or sport, and was keenly engaged with current events and political and financial news her whole life.

Elizabeth was united in marriage to her beloved spouse, and fellow entrepreneur, Brian Matthew Armstrong, on February 11th, 2005. They enjoyed living in the country at the Sundown Ranch with their horses, going on trail rides, playing games with friends, sampling each other’s delicious cooking, gathering with family, and dancing, including square dances and their favourite, the “Midnight Waltz”.  They liked to travel to Arizona in the winter, but mainly spent their time in the beautiful Interlake area.  Most recently they had returned to Winnipeg Beach where they enjoyed relaxing in their cozy home together in front of the fire.   

Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her beloved husband Brian; her children Greg (Heather), Mark, Laurie (Donald); her brother Richard Williams (Peggy); sisters-in-law Antonia Williams and Lenore Williams; daughter-in-law Sylvia; four stepdaughters, their spouses and family. Grandchildren Ace, Max, Blake, Jack, Aria and numerous step grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son Dale, her parents Leonard Francis and Sarah Eileen Williams, stepdaughter Jean Armstrong, and brothers Herbert and John Williams. 

Interment will take place at a later date at Fort Frances Cemetery in Fort Frances, ON. 

If friends so desire in memoriam donations may be made to the Cancer Society and MS Society or a charity of your choice.

Kathaleen Rose Ferreira

February 21, 1945 – November 19, 2022

Kathaleen Ferreira of Winnipeg, MB passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Saturday, November 19, 2022.

She leaves to mourn her sons, Michael, Joey and Jerry.      

Kathaleen was predeceased by her husband Jose’ Ferreira.

Cremation has taken place and interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.

Jack Bennett Nelson

Jack Nelson of Winnipeg Beach, MB passed away at the Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the age of 88 years.

He leaves to mourn his daughter Sharon Nelson and Grandson Jonathan Nelson of California as well as numerous friends.

Jack was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (nee: Graboweski)

Cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Eleanor at the Foley Cemetery in the summer of 2023.

Garnett (Garnie) Allan Gillies

November 25, 1943 – November 20, 2022

Garnie passed away with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jo-Ann, daughter Carrie, daughter Marla (Shawn),granddaughters, Mason and Logan and their father Perry, son, Jeff (Sara),grandsons, Aidan and Erik (Tracy) and twin great granddaughters, Lilith and Phoenix. He is also survived by his siblings, Russell, Judy, Margo, Jocelynne, Roxanne and their spouses and families and sister-in-law, Pat Mazan and her family.

 He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Gar and sister-in-law Marilyn.

Garnie and Jo-Ann met when they were teenagers. They lived in Morse Place and raised three children. They enjoyed a few years of camping with many friends. They had a school bus that Garnie converted to a family summer home on wheels, then he built the family cottage in Lee River in 1973.

They created countless family memories including boating, tubing, waterskiing, snowmobiling, riding dirt bikes and ATV’s.

Garnie converted the family cottage to their dream home and they moved out there in 2000.

They spent winters in Arizona and made many friendships throughout their life through the snowmobile club, the “Moncton Mooners”, their time at Lee River and in Arizona.

Garnie worked alongside his dad Gar and brother Russell at Garnet Amplifiers. After Garnet Amps he started his own contracting company. He was a “jack of all trades.”  He could fix or build anything and was always willing to help anyone at any time.

“Papa”, you were one of a kind, you were loved more than you know! You are truly” UNFORGETTABLE”.

We would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the care he received during his time there.

As per Garnie’s request, there will not be a service. Please celebrate his life how he lived and how you remember him.
