July 4, 1924 – March 29, 2026
Eva was born at Cold Springs, Manitoba. She grew up in Lundar, Manitoba, and was one of nine children born to George and Elizabeth Hayward on the family farm. She was predeceased by all eight of her siblings, Betty, Lal, Fred, Dave, Jim, Nan, Jenny and Les. Brother-in-law Nick Rey and wife May.
Eva is survived by her sons Ken (Kim), Jim (Debbie), grandchildren Kevin, Mike (Ashley), Tyler (Corene), Cory (Eden), with whom she adored. Sister-in-law Margaret Hayward and numerous nieces and nephews.
In the late 40’s, Eva met Bill while playing shortstop for the C.U.A.C. Blues fastball team and had a real wicked side arm throw. She was honored with the MVP trophy for the team that year. Eva had been given a contract to play professional ball in the USA at this time, which was turned down to stay home and work on the family farm with her siblings.
Eva was employed at Eaton’s, downtown Winnipeg for many years before going to work at Loblaws which was closer to home. I remember the Mayor of Winnipeg, Mr. Stephen Juba at the time would come in quite frequently to the store as Eva “made the best hamburgers in town”, as she worked in the cafeteria there.
Some of her favorite times were at her brother Les and Margaret’s farm, where Les had built a raised covered dance floor with lights strung all around and yes, Fred her brother would be up there with her dancing up a storm along with her other siblings. Many good times were had in Lundar.
The other dear place to Eva was at Pye’s Landing, Clearwater Bay in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, in which Bill and Eva had a trailer for almost 30 years. So much time was spent there with family and very dear friends.
Eva had a very special bond with her sister Lal’s girls Lillian Halldorson, Wendy Urban and Edith Zeke and their families right up till the last few years. Many laughs were exchanged between them and a lot of dancing.
During Mom’s last month, all she kept saying was that she “wanted to go home” so as per her wishes, her ashes will be spread in Lundar and at Lake of the Woods at a later date.
Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on Eva’s memorial page using the comment field below.
