It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Monica Unger on March 14, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on July 5, 1957, in Winnipeg, MB, Monica passed away in Selkirk, MB, hospital, surrounded by the love of her family after a valiant five-year battle with cancer.
Monica was predeceased by her parents, Hedwig and Horst Mielke. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Larry Unger, and her beloved children: Melissa Unger (Shaun), Jenna Unger (Michael), Jordan Unger (Melissa), and Jaime Osam (Patrick). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Isabella, Mason, Kingston, Elyon, Elyse, Tanyka, and Jarell. Monica is also survived by her sister, Susan Demchuk, along with extended family and friends who will miss her deeply.
Monica’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family defined her life, but it was her feisty personality, quick wit, and sharp sense of humor that made her unforgettable. She never hesitated to speak her mind or flash her signature eye roll when necessary. Even in the toughest of times, she carried herself with strength, humor, and a fierce determination that inspired everyone around her.
Monica found peace and joy in the mountains, a place that always called to her spirit. The mountains were her sanctuary—a reflection of her own strength and resilience.
She faced her illness with incredible grace, proving time and again that nothing—not even cancer—could dull her spirit. Though she is no longer with us, Monica’s love, laughter, and feistiness will live on in the hearts of those who knew and adored her.
In keeping with Monica’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate her life.
Gone but never forgotten, Monica’s fierce spirit will continue to shine through the love she shared, the memories she left behind, and the towering mountains she adored.

Monica and I started out as colleagues but soon became best friends and remained that way until the end, she was the most honest, caring, supportive person I know and we always had a good laugh. I was very fortunate to have her in my life and she is deeply missed but Never forgotten. Rest in peace now Mon, 💜
Monica and I started out as colleagues, but quickly became best friends for the last 9 years. She’s the most honest and caring person I know, we have had a lot of great times and laughs. I have watched her battle with this for the last 5 years but she always stayed positive and happy. I miss her deeply and am so great full she was in my life, Never forgotten! I love you Mon 💜
I met Monica at Big Whiteshell Lake when I was a teenager. We had a lot of fun together and she was a great friend. Unfortunately we lost touch as people do when you move to another part of the country and raise your own family. Monica and I reconnected a few years ago through Facebook and whenever I came to Manitoba I would try to see her. Monica was a tower of strength with a loving and generous spirit. I will miss her. My sincerest condolences to Larry and family.

To Larry and the entire Unger family.
We met Monica by Larry and China going for their evening walks in the neighbourhood.
We finally talked and met China. Soon after that we were invited over to meet Monica and the rest of the pets.
We all automatically got along so well with common interests animals, music and the love of entertaining .
Our friendship grew over the many years and many Great Danes, we will miss you our dear friend!
Monica was a fierce woman and always put friends and family first.
She had such a knack for gardening … her flowers always looked so lovely and her homes interior decorating was always top notch.
We are happy that we were in that circle.
Our deepest condolences to each and every one in the Unger family.
Rest in peace Monica❤️
I am so very sad to hear of your dear family loss. Monica was such a fun, zesty personality…and a beautiful soul of a woman. I had the honour of doing Monica’s hair- spending many hours laughing and sharing life stories! I loved that time as a felt friend and I would like to mention how many times she talked about her treasured family and pet family- She thought the world of you all and was so very proud and grateful. May she rest in peace and we all get to smile when we think of the imprint on our hearts she left. My deepest condolences….Kathy Sullivan
