Raymond Joseph “Joey” Smyrski

September 3, 1958 – May 15, 2024

It is with deep sadness I announce the passing of Joey after a lengthy illness.

Joey was predeceased by his father Joe in 2017.

He leaves to mourn his mother Jane, sister Kim, brothers Rick and Curtis (Cory), one niece Hannah and two nephews Reade and Merik, plus his partner of 23 years Crystal.

Joey was a one of a kind individual who would help anyone who needed it, no matter how big the job, he would at least try. He had the biggest, kindest heart of anyone I’ve known, and happiest when he had a fishing rod in one hand and a cold beverage in the other.

Throughout his years he had a few passions that he would lament about. Fishing, hunting and golf, he pretty much loved all sports. He favored most his “Blue Jays” baseball team and Saskatchewan “Rough Riders” football team.

He had so many friends that were quite close to him, too many to all mention but you all know who you are. He will be missed by every one of them.

As per Joey’s wishes, Cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.

You’re free now Joey, go have that cold one now.

Till we see each other again.

Joey and I went to school together and became friends right away. Many times were spent talking about our future, where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to do. Many times it was just wishful thinking…..We spent many a time at Pete’s pool hall, or at Surfside playing pinball in the early years. We graduated to Grade 12, where we skipped out of school, along with L.L.. and got drunk on some beers, and smuggled in some beers in the common room at school. The common room was shut down for the rest of the year. Your welcome. Later on, I needed a car and Joey sold me a 1965 Oldsmibiel comfortable. His dad and him got it from Autopac and fixed it up. What a beautiful car. He later repaired a Yamaha snowmobile for me. Like his obit says, he would do anything for anyone…….he did. Back in the day, we would play poker together with some friends. He was losing badly and he lost big time to me. He owed me a bit and said to me, I will give you my leather jacket off my back to pay off the debt. I accepted. I wore that jacket for over 25 years. Unfortunately, like many of us after high school, we drift apart, but we connected a few times, and it was like we seen each other day after day. Joey was a good, honest and true friend, and I will miss you, miss your smile and most of all your laugh, for it ignited the room. The song that connected us was from Michael Pagliaro, “What the Hell I Got”. And w3hat I got was a true friendship with you Joey…….Rest in Peace my friend.

I had the privilege of working with The Reverend Rude Ray for many years as a coworker, and then as his employer, and learned many things from “ Reverend Ray”. When Ray worked for you He did so without complaint, and there was so much pride in his work even though he felt, he did not have pride in himself. He could not have been more wrong. I remember a time seeing Ray lay in water in the spring time in order to fix equipment doing the best he could, and always succeeding. I had two young fellows who worked for me alongside Ray in the summer of 2012 and summer of 2013 and both of them finally remember Ray and the lessons he taught them without being a teacher but more so a mentor Ray left them with a gift that they’ll never forget Joey thank you very much for everything and we will see you again

As Joey’s first cousin, I spent most of my childhood at Gull Lake on weekends and all summer break. All of us cousins were more like siblings and made many memories as Aunty Jane and Uncle Joe took us under their wing.
I am so sad to hear of Joey’s passing as it has been years since we connected, but it warms my heart to read the kind words his friends are sharing.
I feel like I would really have liked the grown up Joey as his heart was full.
    May he Rest in Peace
    Gone but not forgotten 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💔
