Brian Matthew Armstrong

It is with the greatest sadness that the family of Brian Matthew Armstrong announce his passing on March 17/ 2023. Brian was born on Aug. 27, 1928 in Virden Manitoba.

He was predeceased by his wife, Liz in Nov. 2022, and his brother Alvin in Feb. 2023.

As a young man, Brian was very adventurous and, at the age of 14, hopped on a freight train arriving in Calgary Alberta.  There he was taken under the wing of a chef at the “Pallister Hotel”.  Brian started washing dishes and pots, then soon became a line cook and eventually a chef.  Brian was also sent to a competition in Germany to chef and came home with a Silver Medal.

He then returned to Winnipeg where he met and married his first wife, Pauline and together they raised four daughters. He worked at a number of different restaurants before buying the “The Golden Cue Inn” in Selkirk, Man in 1974.

Brian and Pauline, along with their four daughters made a very successful business for 25 years until he retired (for the first time in 2002).

Brian and Pauline went their separate ways but remained very good friends throughout the years.

Brian met and married his second wife, Elizabeth in 2005 where they bought the “Ranch”. There they enjoyed the horses and having family BBQ’s. You could always see dad puttering in the garden with his flowers.

Brian leaves behind a legacy with his four daughters; Shannon (Tim), Linda (Rodney), Mindy (Serg), and Cindy; nine grandchildren, Katie, Candace, Timothy, Mellissa, Amanda, Tyler, Amy, Brandy and Buddy; seventeen great grandchildren and many, many great great-grandchildren.

Brian also leaves behind, his three step children and their families as well as his very special long-time friends Stan Shewchuck and Bev Clayes, to name a few.

Brian was a social butterfly and will be missed by all who knew him.

Following dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Friends and family are invited to share memories and condolences on Brian’s memorial page by using the comment field below.
