Dennis Kenneth Hemeryck

Peacefully, with his family by his side, Dennis passed away at the age of 71. Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Dennis is survived by his wife of 48 years Pat, sons Brad (Michelle) and Darren (Heather) granddaughters, Kendal and Amberlee, sister Lorna (John), sisters-in-law Marcie, Marlene, Sonia (Wilf), Gladys (Don), many cherished nieces and nephews, and grand dog Bailey. He was predeceased by his parents Tonie & Georgette Hemeryck, and brother-in-law, Gerald Mudry.

Dennis grew up in Melita, Manitoba, raised on the family farm in the RM of Arthur. He attended Chesterfield School & Melita Collegiate and participated in track and field, basketball, curling and band where he played the saxophone and trumpet. Dennis’s dad would encourage him to do anything to get him away from farm work which was ok with Dennis as well. After graduating high school in 1968, he attended Assiniboine Technical College in Brandon and obtained employment with Manitoba Hydro in 1970. Dennis was proud to have spent his entire 35-year career with Manitoba Hydro where he spent much of his early years travelling the province in various roles, retiring in 2005 from the Waverly Shop in Winnipeg.

Dennis played baseball for many years and is an honored member of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame, having been inducted in June 2010 with the 1966-1971 Brandon Clover Leafs of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League.

Dennis met Pat through friends at a baseball tournament on July long weekend in 1972. They were engaged in November 1972 and married May 19, 1973. They have been inseparable ever since.

Dennis was an avid curler and all-around sports lover. He spent many hours in various curling rinks around the province competing in bonspiels and later following Brad & Darren in their curling endeavors. Dennis & Pat enjoyed attending numerous men’s and women’s national and world curling events making many friends and memories along the way.

Dennis’s hobbies included following; the Winnipeg Jets, reading, Sudoku, cribbage, and other card games and enjoying travelling with Pat. They visited many destinations in Canada with particular fondness for the East Coast. They also took many trips abroad, particularly loving Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe, with their favorite being Switzerland.

In June 2011, Pat and Dennis moved from their house to their condominium, where Dennis helped wherever needed, especially with the Christmas lights, which he took pride in hanging each year. He also enjoyed many activities with the condo family.

His most favorite place in the world was Rossman Lake. They spent over 45 years there, starting by visiting the Grismer cabin and then eventually purchasing their own in 2003. Every summer was spent enjoying time with family and friends either on the golf course or on the patio. He was often seen volunteering to help maintain the golf course or at tournaments and in later years driving the golf cart for Pat for her daily round of golf.

A few words to describe Dennis are quiet, strong, and humble. His greatest love was his family. In recent years he made it a priority to spend as much time with his granddaughters by having sleepovers, attending their activities, birthday parties or just because. Kindness will live on in his children and grandchildren who were his pride and joy.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the St. Boniface Hospital for their amazing care, guidance, and compassion.

True to Dennis’s character, there will be no formal service.  A celebration of his life will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation https://stbonifacehospital.ca/ or Diabetes Canada at https://www.diabetes.ca/.

    Treasure the Memories!

I remeber working with Dennis at Missi Falls in 1973.
He had just come back from his honey moon and was sent with Armand Juenke and myself, his first day back. He was our fast ball pitcher in a scrub game challenge from the contracter on site. Hydro against contracters. They even flew in a ringer in for their team. They had bulldozed a flat piece of ground out of the bush as our diamond. Dennis did his best; however, his supporting cast come up short. Great memories working with Dennis! Treasure the memories of Dennis’s time with us.
