Lorna Fletcher (nee Smadyllo) peacefully passed away on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021 at 80 years of age.
She was born on December 4, 1940 in Moose Bay, Manitoba, and grew up on her parents’ farm. During her early years, she attended school in the area. She also enjoyed spending time on the farm where she took care of cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, cats and dogs. She then left for Winnipeg at age 16 where she began a new life. In the late 50’s, she met her first husband, Walter. She had 2 children, Donna and Donovan. She spent most of her career working for the Federal Government.
Later in life, she met the love of her life Edward. Together, they travelled all over Canada and United States. They married in Hawaii and a year after came her first granddaughter, Ashley. Later, she was blessed with second granddaughter, Stephanie.
Baba volunteered at Immaculate Heart of Mary school by sewing costumes, overseeing sandwich making for the school tea, shared stories for grandparents’ day and much more.
She was blessed with a third granddaughter, Brittany. Lorna was a dedicated Baba to all 3 granddaughters and enjoyed spending every moment with them.
On Sept. 23, 2011, her beloved husband, Edward, of 22 years, peacefully passed away. She decided to start a new journey at 1630 Henderson, where she met her best friend, Helen. The two of them together were trouble but were inseparable. She enjoyed playing bingo, cards, birthday celebrations, coffee houses, bazaars, just to name a few. She would always talk about the different friendships she made and enjoyed spending time with them.
Fun fact: Baba always enjoyed her grape crush and a tea bag dipped in hot water for 3 seconds.
Baba was always on the go. Nothing ever slowed her down, even as she was being taken to the hospital, she yelled out to Donna “Don’t forget to do my laundry”. Baba was known for baking ginger snap cookies and making cabbage rolls. No one ever went hungry.
Baba was blessed by being able to attend her 1st granddaughter’s wedding in 2016. She referred to Ashley’s husband Matt as the bear and their dog Diesel as the horse.
Baba was fond of Stephanie and Justin as well. She was proud of their career accomplishments and always wanted to see everyone succeed. Baba also cherished her 3rd granddaughter, Brittany, and was extremely proud of all her achievements.
Baba, right till the end, was strong-willed and loved her family deeply. We will greatly miss her laugh, her support and most of all her love.
A huge thank you to St. Boniface Hospital staff on 7West, who gave her exceptional care.

Our thought and prayers are with you at this difficult time. We always enjoyed her company at many games of cards at McBeth House and cheerful phone conversations.
