Johann (John) Penner

April 11, 1923 – March 16, 2020

John passed away March 16, 2020  in Winnipeg with his family by his side.

He is survived by his wife Diane and her family; his daughters, Kathleen and Maureen, his son Murray and their families as well as many extended family members.

John was born in Blumenfeld, MB to Mennonite parents;  Peter J. Penner and Maria (Wiebe) Penner.

He was predeceased by his first wife Katherine (Kaye) in 1983, his son Erroll in 1971 and 11 siblings.

John never knew his mother as she died shortly after giving birth to him.   He and his 4 surviving siblings were all raised by extended family members.

John completed grade 8 and proceeded to serve in the army in World War II as a conscientious objector in the Medical Corps along with his 2 older brothers.

He then took a carpentry course at M.I.T., now Red River College and received his Master Carpenter designation.  His handiwork is very evident all over Manitoba.  He was employed with Via Rail until his retirement.

John enjoyed baseball (was a semi pro pitcher), hockey, golf, curling, hunting.  He loved his Arabian Horses, a rousing game of cards and was well read.  He was fiercely proud, competitive and meticulous.

John was a member of the Church of Christ.

We, as a family, are grateful to those who supported him and us. He truly appreciated the cards, prayers and visits.  To his niece Arlene Heppner- Everett (Wayne) of Michigan, many thanks.   A special thank you to his doctors, home care teams and funeral home staff.

A notice of Service to follow.
