Beryl Edith Smith (nee Williamson)

Peacefully after a brief battle with cancer Mum passed away on March 8, 2025 in her 91st year.

She was predeceased by her husband Jim, daughter Karen, father J.C. (Kelly) and mother Irene Williamson.

She is survived by her daughter Colleen Smith (Ron Almdal); son Norman Smith; son Lorne Smith; daughter Diane Kilcollins (Peter); daughter Sherril Smith; granddaughters Kendal (Richard), Crystal (Nick), Kaitlin (Scott); great grandchildren Sadie & Tobias; brother Alan (Marianne) and their family.

Mum was a very giving mother who loved family and friends. She devoted her life to her husband Jim, raising their 6 children and caring for Karen’s health and well-being throughout her life.

We thank the nurses at the Victoria Hospital for their care and to Dr. Penner for his impeccable bedside manner when he informed Mum of her diagnosis. We also want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Blom and the staff at Riverview 2 West for their incredible care and compassion throughout this very difficult time. In addition, we thank Rick at Interlake Cremation & Memorial Service for his outstanding service.

As per Mum’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

Mum…..your love and kindness was immeasurable. We are forever grateful.

Shirley Yvonne Still

October 27, 1933 – March 5, 2025

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Shirley Yvonne Still (nee Shand) at the Grace Hospital on March 5, 2025. Yvonne was a beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Yvonne was born on October 27, 1933, and is survived by her three children, Paul (Joan) Still, Murray (Brenda) Still, and Lori Kearney and (Denys Duke), as well as six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and her younger brother Bruce Soulsby, as well as foster children that she mothered. She is also survived by her very special friend, Dale Phillips.

Yvonne was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Ernest W. (Ernie) Still, parents Private Joseph Howard Oig, Winifred Shand (nee Thomas). She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Jane Still and her brothers, Glen Shand and Garfield Soulsby. In addition, she was lovingly supported and cared for by her foster parents Rodney and Florence Spence who were an integral part of her life.

Yvonne dedicated her life to the care and nurture of her family and friends. She had a determined attitude and a positive mindset that underpinned her enthusiasm for all she did. Yvonne brought people together in both her personal and professional life. She was ahead of her time by being a professional career woman as well as a mother. Her life’s work was dedicated to the healing of those trapped in addictions as demonstrated by her work with Nechi Institute in Edmonton Alberta, Manitobans for Healing and Reconciliation, and the Stoney Medicine Lodge, which produced a documentary covering 25-years of the Lutselk’e Band in the Northwest Territories.

Yvonne has left a legacy of community service for her children and grandchildren. She will be loved and missed by all whom she has touched, her family, friends, and those in the greater community.

A memorial service will be held for Yvonne on Wednesday, March 12 at 10:30 AM; at St. Clements Anglican Church, #7 St. Clements Drive, Selkirk, MB. (When entering Selkirk turn right on St. Clements Drive (it is the road just before the 55+ Bldg.) when entering Selkirk).

Interment to follow at St. Clements Cemetery.

MOTHER
A flower’s petals droop and fall
When her allotted days are done:
The essence of beauty lives
After setting sun.
And the seeds she nurtured,
Wherever they be, are one
In kinship—each to other—
Blessed in the cherished love
Richly bestowed by Mother.

Joel Thomas Adams

April 7, 1960 – February 11, 2025

After being diagnosed with cancer on his 64^th birthday, Joel was determined to face his medical issues on his own terms. He listened to directives given by his medical team in hopes of making decisions to optimize his strength and maintain his independence. Joel slipped away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre with a caring team of health professionals by his side.

Joel was born and raised in the Westwood area of Winnipeg. Cherished friendships made during his school years were remembered with fondness throughout his life.

Music was a lifelong passion of Joel’s. At a young age he taught himself how to play the drums. Eventually his passion was fulfilled when he moved to B.C. and recorded with the band “Mad Apple.” He also worked on the oyster boats in Fanny Bay, B.C. This experience gave him a strong connection with himself and nature. Joel returned to Winnipeg wrapping up his working years as a shipper/receiver in the manufacturing sector.

Mourning Joel’s passing are his daughter Keegan Walker, his sister and brother-in-law Susan & Ken Stobbs and their family, Luke, Melissa & Paxtin Stobbs, Samantha, Ashley, Grace & Felix Fulton, his helpful cousin Barb Muzik, dedicated friends Chyanne Webb and Sue Walker, numerous cousins, extended family & acquaintances. All family and friends that predeceased Joel are remembered with love and respect even if they have not been named individually.

Gone but never forgotten are his father Bill (1984), mother Joyce (2001), brother Neil (2016), brother Terry (1988), sister Brenda (2022), nephew Nolan (2024), grandpa Adams (1982), grandma Adams (1977), Daddad Coy (1963), Mammam Coy (1971) and his loyal companion Tiger.

Thank you to each staff member at Riverview Health Centre 3E including Nancy & dog Penny. To each and every individual who listened, offered prayer, shared a loving hug, extended a gentle touch or walked an extra mile, may blessings be with you.

Elizabeth Margaret Emily Spence

June 12, 1960 – February 22, 2025

Liz was born and raised by her grandparents in the Gillam, Manitoba area. She attended two separate Frontier School Divisions. The first during grades 9 and 10 at Cranberry Portage, Manitoba and second grades 11 and 12 in Gillam. Liz eventually left Gillam in 1984 in order to attend the four year program at the U of M Social Work Program at Thompson. She met her partner Mitchell Ducharme when he attended the same program in March 1987. Although Liz graduated in 1988 she waited until Mitchell graduated in 1991. Liz meanwhile worked for Community and Youth Correctional Services as a Youth Probation Officer from 1987 to 1991.

She leaves behind her three greatest achievements: Veltina (Tina), Aaron and Kristi. Liz has two nieces, in particular, Marley Spence and Hannah Henderson who have been an integral part of her life.

Predeceased by her grandparents Christine (deceased August 16, 1976) and John Peter’s, parents John (deceased September 15, 1974) and Margaret Spence (nee Massan – deceased October 18, 2018), Brothers Edward and Alex, and Sister Vicki.

The family moved to Brandon where Liz was employed as an Intake Worker with Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba from May 1991 to July 2000. She then rejoined Probation Services until her untimely death on February 22, 2025.

Liz held the position of Area Director – first in Thompson in 2015 and then in Westman until just prior to her passing. Her Probation Officers were her pride and joy. Liz mentored them in the way she would want to be mentored to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of a Probation Officer – but more importantly a civil servant.

Liz fought the daily battles of the stereotypes of being an Indigenous female government employee. She was an active member of Pitima and later co-chair of Brandon Bear Clan and remained an active participant.

Liz touched the lives of many people. She maintained a great sense of humour. Liz will be forever missed. May she now rest in peace. Till we meet again.

In accordance with her wishes, Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
