Ron “Rocket” Palmer

1941 – 2025

This will not be an obituary; this will be a roast. Anyone knowing Dad would appreciate the humour as we best describe this unique “one of a kind” individual.

Dad was the Archie Bunker of Petersfield. He was your typical farmer. Loved money!!! His favourite quote was “rub 2 nickels together until the beaver farts!” Words to describe him are: loud, opinionated, obnoxious, witty, funny and a real nice guy when he was sleeping! His friends at the coffee shop can take out their ear plugs now!

Dad was a mechanic and started his career on the Diefenbaker Dam in Saskatchewan. There he met mom in Dunblane and married in 1963. They moved back to Manitoba and settled in Petersfield to raise their 4 kids.

He was predeceased by his mom and dad, Glen and Dorothy, sister Ellen Brennan and brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Alice and son Kevin.

Dad leaves behind children Dennis (Marilyn), Rhonda (Darcy) and Colleen (Mike), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Special friend Gloria and family and ex-wife and friend Joan. Also, brother Wayne Palmer’s family, brother-in-law Jim Brennan and family.

The last 3 ½ years dad battled with Multiple Myeloma and fought the good fight right to the end. Even though dad couldn’t say words of affection, you knew he really did love his family. He was so proud of all of his grandchildren.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on Don’s memorial page using the comment field below.

Ron was a good man – he always made time to see me when I visited Petersfield- he even paid for Chinese on a few occasions. One thing I know for sure – he loved dogs, lawn mowers and family – no particular order. He will be missed greatly!

I was Ron’s cousin. I grew up on the west coast but every second summer, our family would make the trek east to Petersfield. Spending time with Ron, Wayne and Ellen was great. I thought they were absolutely the coolest people. Fast forward about 50 years to the age of email. Ron and I reconnected and corresponded over the past few years. The interactions were always so enjoyable. He was such a nice guy. I’m so sad to think that he’s gone. My sincere condolences to his friends and family.

It was always a conversation when you saw Ron wherever it may be. Always about the civics of the day that would turn into a history from his past. But always look forward to a conversation with him wherever it went. Thank you for all those conversations and I will miss them.

i loved the condolences, Colleen, the memories of Ron. Thanks for telling us more about what Ron liked when he was younger. i’ am really going to miss him in my life of correspondence Uncle Neil and I were very close to Dorothy and Glen Palmer, his parents and from then on Ron and i corresponded on computer. Neil and I loved the tour of the Mint. We loved our visit to Ron’ farm years ago, a few times, when his parents were still here, and enjoyed seeing his garden, and home. Dorothy and Glen went to Oahu Honolulu, with us in 1986 for a month, and we all really enjoyed ourselves with my sister Doris and her husband.. Since then, life has changed and they’re all gone. Glen and Dorothy wrote us all the time, and still have their letters here. Memories! And I have Ron’s emails to read again. Gonna Miss You Ron! Forever and Ever Amen.

    To the Palmer Family.
I am sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I remember him well from when I worked with him at IH and during my teenage/young adult years when a hung out with Dennis, Rhonda and Kevin. More recently I have had the opportunity to get to know Colleen and Marilyn.

I recently ran into your dad and we were able to reminisce about the past and it was great talking with him. He was the same man I remembered from my youth.

My thoughts are with you during this time.
