It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Monica Unger on March 14, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on July 5, 1957, in Winnipeg, MB, Monica passed away in Selkirk, MB, hospital, surrounded by the love of her family after a valiant five-year battle with cancer.
Monica was predeceased by her parents, Hedwig and Horst Mielke. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Larry Unger, and her beloved children: Melissa Unger (Shaun), Jenna Unger (Michael), Jordan Unger (Melissa), and Jaime Osam (Patrick). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Isabella, Mason, Kingston, Elyon, Elyse, Tanyka, and Jarell. Monica is also survived by her sister, Susan Demchuk, along with extended family and friends who will miss her deeply.
Monica’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family defined her life, but it was her feisty personality, quick wit, and sharp sense of humor that made her unforgettable. She never hesitated to speak her mind or flash her signature eye roll when necessary. Even in the toughest of times, she carried herself with strength, humor, and a fierce determination that inspired everyone around her.
Monica found peace and joy in the mountains, a place that always called to her spirit. The mountains were her sanctuary—a reflection of her own strength and resilience.
She faced her illness with incredible grace, proving time and again that nothing—not even cancer—could dull her spirit. Though she is no longer with us, Monica’s love, laughter, and feistiness will live on in the hearts of those who knew and adored her.
In keeping with Monica’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate her life.
Gone but never forgotten, Monica’s fierce spirit will continue to shine through the love she shared, the memories she left behind, and the towering mountains she adored.
