Mary Ethyl Horwood (nee Wawryk)

April 3, 1940 – February 24, 2025

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our mum, grandma, great-grandma and Sister Mary Ethyl at the age of 84.

Mary Ethyl was predeceased by her husband Raymond Horwood, her parents Nick & Dorothy Wawryk, Sister Muriel Carter, Brothers Paul (Judy) and Ken, Brother-in-law Dennis Boychuck and Ray’s siblings.

Mum is survived by her children Rodney Chanas, Kim Howell and Mark Chanas, grandchildren Steven (Clare) Howell of New Zealand, Kerri (Andrew) Klaprat and great-grandson Lawrence Howell. Her brother Charlie (Lorna) Wawryk, sisters Beverly (Bob) Runzer and Doreen (Wayne) Thomas and Sister-in-law Amy McLay. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Ethyl was born in Selkirk and grew up in the Netley area. She worked at many different places over the years retiring from the Sanatorium Board (MB Lung Association).  Mum loved reading, playing cards, games and her many flower gardens. She loved all kinds of music and was always singing or humming.

Mum suffered from Alzheimer’s for the past 10 years, which was truly heartbreaking for all who knew her. Mary resided at Betel Home for the past 2 years. The family would like to thank the staff at Betel for their care and compassion while she lived there.

Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB. R3C 4G2 or Betel Home Foundation, 212 Manchester Avenue, Selkirk, MB., R1A 0B7.
