March 10, 1928 – December 12, 2025
With friends at her side at Tuxedo Villa Extendicare Home, Sophie went to be with her Lord and Savior. Sophie was born in Gilroy, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of four children. When still an infant, the family moved to Manitoba. Her childhood years were spent at Lydiatt, and then later at Springstein. She was raised in a Christian home and made a commitment to Christ at age 18.
Sophie took her nurses training at the Winnipeg General Hospital now known as HSC. She graduated in 1955. She nursed in Brandon for 3 years, where she started Nurses Christian Fellowship. Later she moved to Montreal where she resided for 24 years. She attended McGill University for 2 years graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Nursing degree. She held a teaching position in one of the hospitals. She joined the staff of a local Pastor with a radio ministry in which she was involved. During this time she met her future husband, Ken Hynd, a pastor and widower with 4 teenage daughters. They were married in 1973. 10 years later the Lord called him home.
Sophie returned to Winnipeg where her aging parents resided. She resumed nursing for a few years, then took an early retirement. This enabled her to become involved in various Christian endeavors, such as “Women’s Aglow”, “It’s a New Day”, Billy Graham Crusade and sharing God’s Word at several senior residences. In 1993 she began attending Immanuel Pentecostal Church, now My Church Winnipeg.
Sophie is survived by her step-daughters Shirley, Carol, Cindy & Ruth. 4 nieces and 5 nephews and several devoted friends.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Ken, parents Gerhard & Anna Lohrenz, siblings Mary Lohrenz, John Lohrenz & Hilda Bergen, sister-in-law Shirley Lohrenz and brother-in-law John Bergen.
Interment has taken place at Springstein Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at My Church Winnipeg, 955 Wilkes Ave Winnipeg Mb at 11:00am Tuesday January 13, 2026.
